Are we cooked?
Heating food in plastic packaging may be much riskier than we think
According to Greenpeace International’s 2026 report, based on 24 research articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals:
Heat accelerates the degradation of the material, causing up to 7 times more fragments to be released in the microwave than in the oven: 5 minutes in the microwave can release up to 326,000–534,000 micro and nanoplastics into the food.
The problem isn’t just the particles. Heat also promotes the release of:
- bisphenols
- phthalates
- PFAS
- antioxidants
- metals
